DUS Bling student hostel visit on 25.06.2005

Yes, This year's activity has begun again. This is what I have been waiting to throughout summer holidays. We had story session on the envy and jealousy experienced by Duryodhana and his father Dhritarashtra and other Kauravas when they come to know of that Pandava's married Draupadi. This was read out in english and explained in Telugu. This was recorded in an audio cassette.

I told the students that I will conduct a test in Speed Maths next week and atleast 20 students should participate. Then we will resume teaching speed maths.

I visited Ambedkar Study Circle situated in Sajeevareddy nagar on 28.06.2005. It provides training to Sc/ST/BC/ Minorities and OC Economically Backwards people for appearing to competitive exams like IAS/ IPS/ APPSC etc. As we feel the blind students also can enter these services, we are trying for a tie-up with training institutes. The director Mr.DVSrinivas, Director was not available. Their contact numbers are 55104423/55596294/ cell 9848305759.

My participation with children at DUS: Summary

Spending time with children gives me delectation especially with DUS children. Every Sunday I take a class to blind children on different aspects, which mainly consists of:

Motivation – Life stories of great people particularly blind people.
Importance of hard work and positive attitude –Vivekananda teachings, small stories, etc.
Good things – Vemana sathakam and small good things.
English – Grammar, spoken English, spellings etc.

Motivation: I narrated the stories of Helen Keller, Anne Sullivan, Sony Terry, Garimella Subramanyam etc., to inspire them and to fortify their willpower to achieve their ambitions. Their stories motivate them to maximum extent as they are also blind people.

Importance of hard work and positive attitude: Every time I give more emphasis on hard work and positive attitude as this is the only way to reach their objectives. As a part of this, I explains them about Vivekananda and Vivekananda quotes like “viswasame balamu, balaheenathaye maranamu,” and some other great people sayings etc. The goal is to understand the importance of hard work and inspiring them to reach their goal with hard work and positive attitude.

Good things: As they are children, I strongly believe that this is the right time to teach them what is right and what is wrong and they can cultivate the good habits from this age. Every Sunday, I teach them one good thing and I explain them by analyzing them. For example, avoid spitting at public places, maintaining clean environment etc.

English: For Telugu medium children, that too studying in government school, English looks like a monster as they cannot understand why it is that much critical. They face problem from spellings, grammar, sentence framing etc. I am trying to teach them as simple as possible so that they can feel easy and learn fast without getting frustration. First I started with basic grammar, parts of speech, vowels, spellings etc. They are also showing enthusiasm to learn English which is a good sign.

In between these, I always chat with them on various issues we come across and explains them very clearly till they understands, which includes current affairs, social issues, science and technology, etc. Also, we always have so much fun with jokes and funny things. I always advise them to learn everything in a funny manner.

Apart from all of the above, I am copying the current affairs from a daily news paper, articles, editorials, technology developments from various sites from internet and saving the information in CDs, so that in the coming future these students can get information through the voice software. Even though it is a time taking process it makes me feel very happy that in the future it will help the blind people.

activity report on 2nd April'05 at Dar Ul Shifa Blind student hostel

I was busy attending meetings on ! & @ nd April. I thought I would go to hotel on Sunday. I suddenly got a call from the students of DUS, asking whether I was coming, else they were planning to go for one bhajan program. I told them they were free to go to bhajan. Then they told me they would wait for me and requested me to come to the hostel. I sensed the thirst for knoledge in the students and all the exhaustion in me on that hot summer evening vanished. I went to the hostel. I found the lights in the hostel were not gloging propperly and foungd a tube light glowing properly and sat under that to teach them spped maths. As the fan above me was making noise, I told them to switch off. one student tried swithching off and switched off light also. It started flickering, i had truoble reading. The students understood my problem and broght a battery light. Though they were bling they gave me light. then we began with prayers, then i told them Bakasura Vadha from Mahabharata. Children enjoyed every bit of the story. Then I taught them Speed maths technics for multiplication with 12, 7, 6 and 8. I recorded the story and speed maths in audio cassettes.

Funding of NGO

Many a time we start off our service activities with lot of enthusiasm and commitment. while the activities run with commitments, as we increase and improve the activities we will be requiring the equipment and other resourses which we have to purchase. That is when we need the funds. The person who is actually in the field and who struggles all the day to earn for himself, will not have much time to chase the funds. But when such persons approach institutions, their conditions will be known.
Normally the conditions that are asked for are 1) Is it a registered organisation? 2) Does it have certified balance sheets for the last 3 years? 3) What is the Equipment required? 4) Any photographs / Vedios of activities available? 5) What is the equipment required? 6) how is the sponsorrs name highlighted? 7) Does the NGO have Income Tax exemption(80G)? 8) Does the NGO have FCNR account i.e foreign currency permission from Home Ministry?

The essential thing required for any activity is people. Very few organizations fund expenditure on people i.e salaries, travel etc. If you are chasing government agencies for the same you may end up in lengthy procedures? Someone should have the aptitude for chasing officials as service activity.
Ultimately quality of the work matters.

I am reading out story in English and traslating to Telugu, so that they can understand English usage. T.Srinivas taught General Knowledge about different countries, currency, capital city, religions etc. Students took notes in braille. About 20 Students attended.
